Did you know one of Southern Maryland’s hidden treasures, the Smith Island Cake is actually Maryland’s State Dessert? Smith Island, an island situated on the Chesapeake Bay between Maryland and Virginia and only reachable by boat, is home to this delicious moist yellow cake with chocolate fudge icing. Their recipe dates back to the early 1800s and some say as far back as the 1600s. These cakes range anywhere from 8 to 14 layers and can be made in a variety of flavors including lemon, carrot, coconut and strawberry.
